Capacity Building for Local Sea-Water Cultivation Proprietors in the Participation and Management of Marine Protected Areas around Yantai Region

Water body pollution from the contaminated land drainage along Yantai coastal region contributes to the causes for the deteriorating of the Yellow Sea Large Marine Ecosystem. This proposal is focused on:
1. Survey of existing environmental conditions in coastal bays:
1.1. Collect relative data on water quality, sediment, sewage, and current;
1.2. Estimate environment capacity of pollutant and culture capacity in marine culture areas;
1.3. Assess culture density situation in bay areas and suitability of cultured species.
2. Study of mariculture activities:
Understand local sea-water cultivation proprietors in Moping and Haiyang, selecting three representative proprietors cultivating fishes with prawn, prawn with crabs, and scallop and sea cucumber. The information and experience learned in this study will be used for educational purposes.
3. Capacity building:
Organise the following activities to educate the local proprietors:
3.1. Discussion with the local proprietors;
3.2. A conference on the relationship of Sea water cultivation with water quality and marine environment protection;
3.3. Information exchange;
3.4. Workshops on healthy cultivation with the local people and experts.
