Database Development

Effective management of data and information would contribute to the successful implementation of the YSLME Project. Once established, the databases, consisting of meta database and GIS database, are expected to:

• enhance data sharing and managing for the Project;
• enhance data exchange with other existing databases; and
• establish a long-term mechanism for data collection, storage, and sharing

The databases will be hosted by the China-Korea Joint Ocean Research Center (CKJORC) as the First Regional Scientific and Techinical Panel (RSTP) Meeting (Dalian, China, 4-6 July, 2005) agreed. The Project Management Office (PMO) will supervise the CKJORC for developing and operating the databases. First Institute of Oceanography (FIO) will provide the CKJORC with necessary technical support as well as software to assist the development and maintenance of the databases.

Several concrete progresses have already been made by the CKJORC as follows:

• A working group was established, which consisted of various experts in GIS, ecosystem, database development and management, and internet-based databases;
• A proposal for developing the databases was prepared and submitted to the PMO; and
• The structure of the databases for each project component was designed.

Based on the proposal submitted from the CKJORC, the PMO has been discussing with the Center regarding expected activities to develop the databases. The contract to implement this activity will be made between the two entities as soon as both parties reach an agreement.
