The Project seeks institutions or individuals to implement a
demonstration activity on “Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture in the
Yellow Sea” and the use of carrying capacity modelling in order to show
the environmental and economic benefits of this type of aquaculture, and
provide training and raise public awareness amongst mariculture farmers.

***The demonstration activity on “Integrated Multi-trophic
Aquaculture in the Yellow Sea” should address the regional target of
“Improvement of sustainable mariculture techniques to reduce the
environmental impact of mariculture.” This activity should show the
effectiveness of integrated multi-trophic aquaculture and the use of
carrying capacity modelling in reducing the nutrient load in surrounding
waters, and provide training and raise public awareness amongst
mariculture farmers of the environmental and economic benefits of this
type of aquaculture.*** The activity should also meet the following requirements: 1) carry out the necessary activities in the coastal areas of the Yellow Sea; 2) demonstrate/evaluate the environmental benefits of the integrated multi-trophic aquaculture and the use of carrying capacity models in terms of reduced nutrient discharge to both government and farmers; 3) demonstrate the economic benefits of integrated multi-trophic aquaculture and the use of carrying capacity models to both government and farmers; 4) raise awareness of the technology amongst mariculturists; 5) host training workshops and provide advice to local farmers; The expected outputs of this activity are: 1. Technical Guidelines on the implementation of integrated multi-trophic aquaculture and the use of models to estimate optimal mariculture carrying capacity; 2. Report showing the work carried out and results of the above requirements; 3. Report describing methods used to persuade farmers to adopt these guidelines and an evaluation of economic and environmental benefits; and 4. Based on the experience, provide recommendations on how to encourage the uptake of integrated multi-trophic aquaculture by farmers.
