Strategic Action Programme Demonstration Activity for Managing Pollution in Critical Habitats around the Yellow Sea

DESCRIPTION The Project seeks institutions or individuals to implement a cross-component demonstration activity on “Managing Pollution in Critical Habitats around the Yellow Sea.” This activity should show the effectiveness of how regular monitoring and assessment of the ecosystem and exchange of information across different responsible agencies can help improve the marine habitats through controlling marine pollution in the Yellow Sea.

Expected Procurement Components
 
***The demonstration activity on “Managing Pollution in Critical Habitats around the Yellow Sea” should include the tasks listed below.

1. Area of work
• Using the list of the identified critical habitats identified under the YSLME Project, select 1 or more habitats to work in.

2. Controlling total quantity of pollutant discharge
• Identify the sources and loads of major pollutants affecting the selected habitat.
• Assess the existing pollution problems in/around the habitat.
• Establish a monitoring programme in/around the habitat to monitor pollutants and biodiversity status, and carry out a preliminary study on the impacts of pollutants to the health of the habitat and its surrounding areas.
• Predict which problems will remain or what new problems will occur if no management is put in place.
• Recommend allowable pollutant discharge levels to maintain the habitat and its biodiversity.

3. Data and information exchange
• Hold discussions/meetings/workshops as needed, to exchange information on biodiversity and pollutants for the selected area.

4. Policies for management
• Explain findings from #2 and #3 above to management authorities in critical habitat area.
• Assist management authority to improve any existing management plans or develop an appropriate management plan for the habitat through providing recommendations and/or an implementation plan for additional work needed to monitor & manage the critical habitat.

The maximum implementation period of the project is 18 months. The project must be completed by December 2009 at the latest.
