Strategic Action Programme Demonstration Activity for Effectiveness of Assessments of Limited Water-Exchange Mariculture Systems

DESCRIPTION The Project seeks institutions or individuals to implement a demonstration activity on “Limited Water-exchange Shrimp Culture” in order to show the environmental and economic benefits of this type of aquaculture, and provide training and raise public awareness amongst mariculture farmers.

Expected Procurement Components
 
***The demonstration activity on “Limited Water-exchange Shrimp Culture in the Yellow Sea” should address the regional target of “Improvement of sustainable mariculture techniques to reduce the environmental impact of mariculture.” This activity should show the effectiveness of Limited Water-exchange Shrimp Culture in reducing the nutrient load in discharged waters, and provide training and raise public awareness amongst mariculture farmers of the environmental and economic benefits of this type of aquaculture.***

The activity should also meet the following requirements:

1) carry out the necessary activities in the coastal areas of the Yellow Sea;
2) demonstrate/evaluate the environmental benefits of the limited water-exchange shrimp culture in terms of reduced nutrient discharge to both government and farmers;
3) demonstrate the economic benefits of limited water-exchange shrimp culture to both government and farmers;
4) raise awareness of the technology amongst mariculturists;
5) host training workshops and provide advice to local farmers;

The expected outputs of this activity are:

1. Technical Guidelines on the implementation of limited water-exchange shrimp culture techniques;
2. Report showing the work carried out and results of the above four requirements;
3. Report describing methods used to persuade farmers to adopt these guidelines and an evaluation of economic and environmental benefits; and
4. Based on the experience, provide recommendations on how to encourage the uptake of limited water-exchange shrimp culture by farmers that are currently using less environmentally friendly culture practices .

The maximum implementation period of the project is 18 months. The project must be completed by December 2009 at the latest.
