The Project seeks institutions or individuals to implement a
demonstration activity on “Assessing and Monitoring the Impacts of
Climate Change on the Yellow Sea’s Ecosystem” in order to show
the benefits of carrying out regular monitoring of the Yellow Sea, and

***The demonstration activity on “Assessing and Monitoring the
Impacts of Climate Change on the Yellow Sea’s Ecosystem” should address
the regional target of “better understanding and prediction of ecosystem
changes for adaptive management.” This activity should show the benefits
of regular monitoring in the Yellow Sea, and how the results can be used
for better management of the Yellow Sea’s ecosystem.***
The activity should also meet the following requirements:
1. Access the results from the 2 co-operative cruises held between China
and ROK in 2008;
2. Develop regional guidelines on monitoring and research regarding the
impacts of climate change on ecosystem in the Yellow Sea;
3. Compile existing data and knowledge on the assessment of impacts of
climate change;
4. Develop necessary models for studying impacts of climate change on
ecosystem in the Yellow Sea;
5. Commence developing or harmonising national and regional monitoring
methodologies and assessment of impacts;
6. Begin establishing a basin-scale monitoring network; and
7. Initiate dialogue with relevant government agencies to increase
investment on taxonomical research, and develop schemes with relevant
agencies to incorporate the assessment into management policy.
The expected outputs of this activity are:
1. Regional guidelines on monitoring and research regarding the impacts
of climate change on the ecosystem in the Yellow Sea;
2. Illustrated improved data and knowledge gathered on climate change
impacts in the Yellow Sea;
3. Plans developed with policy making bodies to incorporate the improved
data and knowledge into management.
4. The final report should also include descriptions of the signal of
climate change in the Yellow Sea Cold Water Mass (volume of water mass,
intensity of stratification, range and average temperature); and
5. The final report should also include the signal of climate change
from the plankton and benthos communities.
